Creating a Clean, Healthy Kampala: Solid Waste Management
Kampala City is currently choking with garbage. Uncollected and untreated garbage is everywhere and it is a major health hazard to residents and visitors in this beautiful city. I will launch and operate major solid waste management systems that will permanently rid Kampala of its perennial garbage problem.
The Plan
1. Comprehensive waste collection system
- Garbage collected twice each week from City center and all residential areas
- Collection by public utility vehicles and employees
- No discrimination based on social status - all garbage is hazardous to everybody
- Professional waste management teams across all divisions
2. Advanced waste processing and recycling
- Systematic sorting of collected waste
- Recycling programs for reusable materials
- Treatment and processing of organic waste
- Incineration for non-recyclable materials with proper environmental controls
3. Environmental protection measures
- Accelerate banning of all plastic products in the City
- Pass and enforce by-law banning littering
- Clean and safeguard drainage tunnels, water streams and other water sources
- Rehabilitate public parks, gardens and recreational resources
4. Tree planting and green initiatives
- Embark on massive tree-planting campaign throughout Kampala
- Ensure one million seedlings planted annually in private and public spaces
- Make tree care a daily ceremony for Kampala residents
- Strongly discourage unnecessary cutting down of trees
5. Job creation through waste management
- Create more than 200,000 well-paying jobs in solid waste management
- Employment opportunities for engineers, technicians, garbage collectors, truck drivers, and recyclers
- Training programs for youth in environmental management
- Economic empowerment through green jobs
This solid waste management system will transform Kampala from a filthy, garbage-choked city to the cleanest city not only in Uganda, but in the region. We shall keep our neighborhoods as clean as the city center.
